Outfield

The outfield was land that was, generally, less suitable for agriculture than the infield. Typically, plots in the outfield would be cultivated for up to three years, and then left fallow for a few years before cultivation could begin again. In between episodes of cultivation, stock could be grazed on the fallow land, manuring the fields to reinvigorate the soil.
