Beyond the outfield was the hill pasture or upland. In the summer, women and children moved stock onto the hill pastures in May, remaining there for between eight and ten weeks. During this period they would live in sheiling huts and produce cheese and butter. The uplands were also important for the collection of peat, which was important as a source of fuel.
