excavations, site visits & Trails

2005

The Historic Landscape Project for schools finished in summer 2005. The pupils from Killin, Kenmore and Glenlyon Primary Schools took part in several projects, facilitated by the NTS regional education officer - these included an excavation at Meggernie Outdoor Centre, the creation of a history trail at Kiltyrie, an oral history programme with local residents and participation in a research programme.

The third schools' excavation took place at Meggernie Outdoor Centre, thanks to the landowner and the wardens at the Centre. Pupils from Glenlyon, Kenmore & Killin did some surveying, excavating and finds processing. They worked with archaeologists from Glasgow University and also the NTS regional archaeologist who has recorded the results.

2004 Site Visit

Local primary school pupils visited the excavation at Tombreck in September. The pupils discussed the landscape - and why people choose particular sites for their homes and farms. They also considered the reason that this site had been selected by the archaeologists for the excavation. The pupils were then shown round the excavation - they investigated the work in progress, the tools being used and the finds.

Cultural History Trails

extract from map keyPupils from Killin and Kenmore devised a cultural history trail at Kiltyrie, with the help of the NTS regional archaeologist and Ben Lawers ranger service. This is work in progress. The National Trust for Scotland is producing an Interpretive Plan for the whole of the Ben Lawers area (Trust owned land) and, subject to funding, the trail will be part of this plan.

The area of Kiltyrie is owned by the NTS but farmed privately. We would like to thank both farmers involved for their support. If you wish to inspect the cultural remains at Kiltyrie, please remember that this a working farm and keep to the Countryside Code: shut gates and take care around animals. The ground is rough and not suitable for small children. Wear suitable clothing. Here are some of the pupils' contributions to the project.

Killin Primary School produced three finished trails which we used at our Open Day at Kiltyrie in June 2005:
